Nine times out of ten in West Texas homes, that's a mat of dust and pet hair choking the coil. The kitchen feels warm down near the bottom of the box, nothing has broken yet, but something is off. Takes about five minutes. Here's how.

What a dirty coil actually does to your fridge
The condenser coil dumps heat out of your food and into your kitchen. Cover it with dust, lint, and dog hair and that heat has nowhere to go. So the compressor keeps running to make up the difference, longer and longer, until it's going almost all the time. Everything inside gets hotter than it was built to get. Over months the compressor and the fan motor wear down. In a Lubbock summer with the house already sitting at 80 degrees, that coil never gets a break. A fridge that had years left in it quits early. The dust did it, slowly.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the refrigerator first. Not the breaker, not a switch. Pull the plug. Then find the coils. On most fridges built in the last fifteen years they sit behind a snap-on grille at the bottom front, or behind a vented panel at the very back near the floor. Older units have a black grid across the back. If the front grille comes off with light hand pressure, pop it off. Vacuum with a brush attachment. A coil brush from the hardware store reaches farther back. Hit the fan grille too if you can see it, then snap the cover on and plug it back in.
How often, and when
Twice a year covers most homes. Once in spring before the heat sets in, once in fall. Got a shedding dog or cat? Make it every three months, because hair mats onto coils faster than dust does. Same if the fridge sits on carpet or near a door that tracks dirt inside. Hard water and dry Texas air mean fine grit floats around and settles too. Tie it to something you already do, like changing your air filter. And while you're down there, look at the floor under the fridge. Standing water is a separate problem worth a call.
Signs prevention is already too late
Cleaning helps a struggling fridge, but it won't fix a failed part. Call for service if the compressor runs constantly and never cycles off. Same if the outside of the cabinet, the sides especially, feels hot instead of warm. Frost building on the back wall of the freezer, water pooling in the crisper, or the freezer holding fine while the fridge section warms up, all of that points past coil dust. A loud buzz or click every few minutes and then silence means the compressor is trying to start and failing. Food safety comes first. Move what you can to a cooler and reach us.
What to leave alone
Vacuuming coils is safe with the fridge unplugged. Past that, stop. Don't pull interior back panels to chip at frost. Don't open the sealed system or mess with refrigerant lines. Don't test electrical components inside the machine, either. Capacitors hold a charge after the power is off, and that charge is enough to hurt you. If the coils look clean and the fridge still can't hold temperature, the trouble is inside where it takes meters and training. Can I just use a broom or a rag?
A rag pushes dust deeper into the fins. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment so the debris leaves the house instead of moving somewhere else. A long coil brush along with the vacuum hose beats either one by itself.
My fridge has no coils I can see. Where are they?
A lot of newer models hide them behind a bottom-front grille that snaps off by hand. Others vent out the back near the floor. Your owner's manual will say where. If nothing pops off easily, leave it alone.
Will cleaning the coils fix a warm refrigerator?
Sometimes, if dust was the whole problem. Give it 24 hours after you clean and check the temperature again. Still warm, or the compressor never shuts off? Then something else failed and it needs a look.
