What an empty ice bin is actually telling you
An ice maker needs water coming in, cold air around the mold, and a harvest cycle that dumps the cubes. Take away any one of those and production stops. The pattern tells us which one. No water at all usually points at the supply side. Small, hollow, or slow cubes mean restricted flow, and around Lubbock that often comes down to hard water scale. Cubes that form but never drop point at the ejector or the bin arm. Frost caked over everything is a defrost or seal problem instead.
Cause family one: water not getting there
Start here. It's the cheapest thing to check and the most common thing we find. The saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge may have been bumped closed. The supply line can kink when somebody pushes the fridge back against the wall. In winter, a line running through an exterior wall can freeze solid. On a lot of fridges the water runs through a filter, and a clogged filter starves the ice maker before you notice anything wrong with the drinking water. West Texas water loads filters faster than the manual says it will. If your dispenser also trickles, look at the water supply.
Cause family two: temperature and airflow
Ice makers want the freezer near zero degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer than that, the harvest cycle never triggers and cubes sit half-frozen in the mold. Check the setting first. Then look at how the freezer is packed. Boxes stacked against the rear vents block the cold air the ice maker depends on. A door left ajar or a worn gasket that no longer seals lets humid summer air in, and frost builds. If the ice cream has gone soft too, you've got a freezer problem, not an ice maker problem.
Cause family three: the ice maker itself
Water arrives, freezer is cold, still no ice? Now the unit is the suspect. The fill valve can stick shut or leak through. The mold heater that loosens the cubes can fail, and the ejector arm stalls against frozen ice. The bin level arm or optical sensor can read "full" with an empty bin, which shuts production off completely. Scale inside the fill tube causes a slow drip that freezes into a mound and blocks the tube. Those are parts we test and replace, not something to pry at from the kitchen floor.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe for you: make sure the shutoff valve behind the fridge is open, look for a kinked line, note the freezer temperature, pull food away from the vents, change the water filter, wiggle the bin arm to be sure nothing's holding it up, and dump any fused clump so the ejector is clear. Stop there. We go further with a meter, checking the fill valve solenoid, mold heater, thermostat, and control board, and we measure the actual fill volume. We flush scale out of the fill tube too. When it's worth repairing versus replacing
An ice maker is a module. It usually comes out as one assembly, so the job stays simple even on an older fridge. If the rest of the refrigerator cools well and the doors seal, fixing the ice side is generally worth doing. Why are my ice cubes tiny and hollow?
Restricted water flow, nearly every time. A clogged filter, a shutoff that's partly closed, or scale narrowing the fill tube. The mold gets a short fill, so cubes come out small, hollow, or crescent-shaped.
How long should a new ice maker take to start making ice?
Give it about 24 hours after installation, or after the freezer gets down to temperature. The first batch or two may look cloudy or taste off. Throw those out, then judge the production rate.
Can hard water really kill an ice maker?
Yes. Lubbock-area water leaves mineral scale inside the fill tube and the valve. Scale narrows the opening, causes drips that freeze into blockages, and makes valves stick. Changing the filter on schedule slows it down.
