What all that ice is actually telling you
Frost is humidity that got into the freezer and froze on the coldest thing it touched. A little is normal, especially in a Texas summer when you open the door into 100-degree air. A half-inch slab on the back panel is not. Your freezer already has a plan for frost: a heater melts it off the coils a few times a day and the water drains away. Buildup means either way more moisture is getting in than the system can handle, or the melting cycle stopped running. Where the ice sits tells you a lot. Back wall points at the coils. Start with the door and how you use it
Cheapest cause first, the gasket. That rubber strip has to squish flat against the frame, and if it's cracked, curled, or stiff, humid room air leaks in all day and freezes. Look for a bent door, a sagging hinge, or a bin sticking out so the door never shuts all the way. Trays of water, hot leftovers going straight in, long door-open sessions while you decide on dinner, all of it adds moisture. A drawer freezer that gets overpacked can jam and leave a gap you'd never notice. Fix the leak and the frost often calms down without a single part.
Defrost problems and drain clogs
Next family up is the defrost system. There's a heater near the evaporator coils, a sensor, and a timer or control board that runs the cycle. If one of those quits, frost never melts. It builds until the coil is packed solid, airflow dies, and the fresh food side warms up too. Warm fridge plus icy freezer is a strong hint. Related problem: the drain hole under the coils clogs with gunk or freezes shut. Now meltwater has nowhere to go, so it refreezes into a sheet on the freezer floor or leaks out under the crisper drawers.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the unit before you poke around inside. Close the door on a dollar bill or a strip of paper and pull. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is weak right there. Wipe the gasket with warm water and mild soap, because sticky crumbs keep it from sealing. Look for ice around the door frame, and make sure shelves and bins let the door close flush. Check that the freezer is set around zero degrees, not colder. Leave the back of the fridge a few inches of breathing room. Do not pull the rear panel inside the freezer, and do not chip ice with a knife or screwdriver.
