Age is the first thing we ask about
A freezer under about ten years old is usually worth fixing. Parts are still made, the sealed system is likely sound, and one bad component doesn't mean the rest of it is tired. Past fifteen years, the math changes. Compressors that have run through West Texas summers in a hot garage have worked hard. Door gaskets shrink, insulation packs down, and the cabinet fights to hold temperature. We still repair older units when the fault is simple and the cabinet is solid. But we'll tell you plainly if we think you're about to start a series of repairs instead of one.
Fault type tells you most of the story
Some faults are routine. A failed defrost thermostat, a bad start relay, a burned-out condenser fan, a torn door gasket, a stuck thermostat, or a clogged drain line, those are parts-and-labor jobs on almost any freezer. Sealed system problems are different. A refrigerant leak or a dead compressor means opening the closed loop, and on a chest freezer that work often costs more than the cabinet is worth. Same with a cracked liner or a rusted-through floor. We check the easy causes first, because a freezer that won't cool is more often a fan or a defrost issue than a compressor.
Parts have to actually exist
We can diagnose anything. We can only fix what we can get parts for. Common freezers from major brands have good parts support for years after they're built. Discontinued models, off-brand imports, and very old chest units sometimes have no replacement control board or evaporator fan available anywhere. Cosmetic pieces like baskets, lids, and shelves go out of production first. If a part is gone, we say so instead of stringing you along. Sometimes a generic thermostat or universal relay works fine. Sometimes it doesn't, and that's the end of the road for that unit.
What happens when we're standing in front of it
First we listen and feel. Is the compressor running? Is the condenser coil hot or cool? Is the interior fan moving air? Then we check temperature at the evaporator against the cabinet, look at frost patterns, and test the components that control cooling and defrost. Frost only on one wall means something different than frost everywhere. We also look at the cabinet itself: gasket condition, hinge alignment, rust, and whether the drain is plugged. Around Lubbock, hard water and dusty air foul condenser coils fast, and a filthy coil can look like a dying compressor when it's just dirty.
When we tell you to replace it
Sealed system failure on an older unit is one. So is a cabinet that's rusted through or has a cracked inner liner, or a unit that's already had two or three repairs in a couple of years, or a model where the control board is discontinued. Also worth weighing: a garage freezer that isn't rated for extreme heat will keep struggling every August no matter what we replace inside it. Newer freezers pull less power, which matters if yours runs constantly. We'd rather lose the repair than take your money for a unit that fails again in six months. Simple checks before you call
Confirm the outlet has power by plugging a lamp in. Check that the lid or door seals flush all the way around. A dollar bill should drag when you close it on the gasket. Make sure the unit isn't packed so tight air can't circulate. Pull it out and vacuum dust off the coil at the back or underneath if you can reach it safely. Verify the thermostat dial hasn't been bumped. Water pooling at the bottom points to a plugged drain. Don't remove panels, don't touch wiring, and don't try to add refrigerant. Anything past these checks, let us handle it.
