A washer's birthday isn't the whole story. What matters is how it was built and how hard it's worked. A machine in its first several years with one failed part is usually worth fixing. Once a unit is well past the decade mark and has already had two or three repairs, the math shifts. Out here in West Texas, hard water speeds all of that along. Scale builds in valves, hoses, and heating elements. A washer running on untreated well water can wear like it's years older than it is. We look at the condition of the parts, not the model year on the sticker.
The fault itself tells you a lot
Some failures are routine. Drain pumps clog with coins and hair ties. Lid switches wear out, door boots tear, belts stretch, and inlet valves crust shut from mineral deposits. Those are contained problems, and fixing one doesn't mean another is due next month. Other failures sit deeper. A bad bearing means pulling the drum apart. A cracked outer tub or a rusted-through spider arm on a front loader is major surgery. When a repair means taking most of the machine apart, we say so plainly. Can we even get the part
