Draining and spinning are linked. Most washers will not spin until the water is out. So if the tub stays full, the spin cycle gets skipped and the machine either stalls, beeps, or ends the cycle with a soaking load. That means a drain problem and a spin problem often share one root cause. Sometimes the opposite happens. Water leaves fine, but the drum never picks up speed, and that points somewhere else, usually a belt, a lid switch, or a worn drive part. Knowing which of those two you have saves time. Watch one full cycle and note when it quits.
Cause family one: a clog somewhere in the path
This is the cheapest and most common. Water leaves the tub through a filter, a pump, a hose, and then your house drain. A sock, a bra wire, lint, or a wad of pet hair can plug any of it. In West Texas we also see hard water scale narrowing the drain hose over the years, so the pump pushes but nothing moves. A kinked hose behind the machine does the same thing. Standpipe backups count too. If the laundry sink gurgles or the floor drain burps when the washer empties, the problem may be your plumbing and not the appliance.
Cause family two: the machine thinks the lid is open
Every washer has a switch or lock that tells the control board the door is shut. Front loaders use a door lock assembly. Top loaders use a lid switch or a magnetic sensor. When that part fails or the strike is bent, the washer fills and drains but refuses to spin, because spinning with an open door is dangerous. You'll often hear a click, or nothing at all. Error codes about the door are a strong clue. The part is small, but replacing it means getting into the cabinet, and that's a service call rather than a homeowner job.
Cause family three: pump, belt, or motor trouble
If the drain path is clear and the door locks fine, the moving parts get suspect. A drain pump that's burned out will hum and do nothing, or stay silent. A stretched or broken belt lets the motor run while the drum sits still. Worn motor couplers on some top loaders snap and give the same result. Bad bearings make a roar during spin and eventually stop it. Overloading speeds all of this up, and so does a machine sitting out of level on a garage slab. We diagnose these by feel, sound, and testing, not by guessing at parts.
