Summer heat is the hardest season on your refrigerator
When the garage or kitchen sits above 95 degrees, a fridge compressor runs almost nonstop. Condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair can't dump heat, so the freezer frosts up while the fresh food side goes warm. Ice makers fall behind. Garage freezers struggle worst of all. Before June, pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils at the back or behind the bottom grille. Wipe the door gasket with soap and water, then check that it seals on a sheet of paper. Leave a few inches of air space on the sides. If the unit runs constantly and still feels warm inside, call us.
Hard water scale builds all year and shows up as poor cleaning
West Texas water leaves chalky mineral deposits inside anything that heats water. Dishwashers get film on glasses, clogged spray arm holes, and slow drains. Washing machines end up with stiff inlet screens and weak fill, and water heaters and ice makers scale up too. Scale is gradual, so people blame the detergent. Run a dishwasher cleaner monthly. Poke the spray arm holes clear with a toothpick. Pull the filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under the tap. If fill is slow, shut the water off and check the hose screens for grit. Heavy scale on internal parts needs service.
Fall and winter bring dryer and laundry trouble
Cold, dry air changes how dryers behave. Static climbs, loads feel damp, and cycles stretch out. Most of the time the vent is the problem, not the machine. Lint packs the duct, blocked flaps freeze shut, and a long run to an outside wall traps moisture. A dryer that gets hot but won't dry usually has airflow trouble. Disconnect the vent hose and clear it. Go outside and make sure the flap opens when the dryer runs. If water pools on the lint screen, clean it with water and a brush. Washers in unheated garages can freeze, so drain the hoses and keep the space above freezing.
Spring storms, dust, and power swings
Spring dust storms coat condenser coils and clog window and vent screens fast. Blowing grit gets into door seals. Storms also bring flickers and surges that scramble control boards on ranges, dishwashers, and newer fridges. If an appliance acts strange after an outage, unplug it for five minutes and plug it back in. Many boards reset. Surge protection on refrigerators and ovens is cheap insurance. After a dusty stretch, wipe the coils and gaskets and check that the dryer and range hood exterior vents aren't packed. If a control panel stays dark or the buttons do the wrong thing, stop using it and reach us.
A short pre-season checklist worth twenty minutes
Do this twice a year, spring and fall. Vacuum the refrigerator coils and clear the drain pan area. Check that the fridge door closes on its own from halfway open. Clean the dishwasher filter and spray arms. Look at the washer fill hoses for bulges or rust at the fittings, and replace any hose that looks tired. Clear the full dryer vent run and test the outside flap. Level any appliance that rocks. Listen for new noises when each unit starts and stops, because small problems make sound before they make a mess. Anything past a plug, hose, or filter, let us look at it.

Why does my refrigerator only struggle in summer?
Heat and dirty coils together. The compressor can shed heat in mild weather, but not at 100 degrees with dust-packed coils. Cleaning the coils often fixes it. If it doesn't, sealed system or fan problems need testing.
Can hard water actually ruin an appliance?
It shortens the life of one. Scale insulates heating elements, narrows water passages, and jams valves. Regular cleaning and descaling slow that down a lot. Once scale builds up inside pumps and valves, though, it usually means part replacement.
Is it safe to keep a freezer in the garage in Texas?
Only if it's rated for wide temperatures. Standard units struggle above roughly 100 degrees and can quit, thawing your food. Check the label, keep it out of direct sun, and clean the coils often.
