What lint buildup does month after month
Lint doesn't fall out of a duct. It sticks to the walls, worst at the bends and where the pipe gets crushed behind the dryer. Every load adds a little more. As the opening narrows, hot wet air backs up into the drum, and clothes take two cycles instead of one. The heating element or gas burner runs longer than it was built to run, and the high-limit thermostat starts cycling on and off to protect the machine. All that extra heat is hard on drum bearings, belts, and control boards. Out here, summer attic heat makes a vented duct run hotter still. Lint is fuel, too. A clogged vent plus a long hot cycle is how dryer fires start.
The habit that prevents most of it
Two minutes per load. Pull the lint screen and wipe it clean with your hand every time, before you load. Once a month, wash the screen in warm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft brush. Hard water and dryer sheets leave a film on the mesh you can't see. If water pools on the screen instead of running straight through, it's coated and choking airflow. Step outside while the dryer runs and find the exterior flap. You should feel steady warm air pushing out, and the flap should be standing open. Keep grass, mulch, and bird nests away from it. That habit catches most problems early.
How often the duct itself needs cleaning
For a household running four to six loads a week, clear the full duct once a year. Make it every six months if you have a big family, a long duct run, more than two elbows, or a dryer sitting in a closet or an upstairs laundry room. Homes with pets that shed heavy hair often need twice a year as well. Drying blankets, moving pads, or shop towels? Plan on six months. New home, short straight run through the wall, two people doing laundry, once a year is fine. Mark it on the calendar alongside the smoke detector batteries so it actually gets done.
Signs you're already past prevention
Clothes come out damp after a full cycle. The laundry room gets hot and the dryer top is too hot to rest your hand on. You smell something burnt or musty in the load, and the cycle runs much longer than it used to. No air moves at the outside flap, or the flap stays shut while the dryer runs. Lint shows up on the floor behind the dryer or around the door seal. Sometimes the dryer shuts itself off mid-cycle and restarts later. Any of that means the duct is restricted right now, and wiping the screen won't fix it. Quit running heavy loads until the line is cleared.
When to hand it to us
Some ducts you can reach with a brush kit from the back of the dryer. Others run twenty feet through a crawlspace, up a wall, or out a roof cap you have no business climbing to. If you can't find both ends, or the duct is flexible foil that's kinked and torn, call instead of fighting it. Does a shorter vent still need cleaning?
Yes. Short runs clog slower, not never. Lint still collects at the wall opening and behind the exterior flap. Once a year is a reasonable check even on a straight three-foot run.
Can I just use the leaf blower trick?
It moves the loose lint and leaves the packed layer stuck to the duct walls. It can also blow lint back into the room. A rotating brush pulled through the full length does a much better job.
Is a ventless or heat pump dryer exempt?
There's no duct to clean, but those have their own lint filters plus a condenser screen that needs rinsing. Skip it and drying times climb the same way. Check your manual for the schedule.
