What a two-cycle load is actually telling you
A dryer does not dry clothes with heat alone. It heats air, pushes that air through the drum, and carries the moisture outside. Break that last part and the heat just sits there. Clothes stay damp, the cabinet gets hot, and the cycle runs long because the sensor never sees dry laundry. That is why long dry times point at the vent first. If the outside flap barely moves while the dryer runs, you already found your problem. Same story if the laundry room feels like a sauna afterward, or the clothes come out hot but heavy.
Cause one: lint you can reach
Start with the cheap stuff. Pull the lint screen every single load, not most loads, and hold it up to the light. If it looks solid instead of mesh, dryer sheet residue has coated it and air is fighting through. Wash it with warm water and a soft brush, then let it dry all the way. Next, look down the slot the screen drops into. Lint packs down in there where the screen does not reach, and a vacuum crevice tool gets most of it. This alone fixes a fair number of long dry times, especially in homes running heavy loads all week.
Cause two: the vent run behind and outside
Pull the dryer out a couple feet and look at the flexible duct. Is it crushed against the wall, kinked, or sagging into a low spot where lint and moisture collect? That kills airflow. Foil accordion duct is the usual offender. Then walk outside and find the vent hood while someone runs the dryer on air fluff. The flap should swing open with steady warm air behind it. In our part of Texas we find bird nests, dryer sheet fuzz cemented by humidity, and hoods painted shut. Long runs through an attic or a crawl space collect more lint than a short wall run.
Cause three: heat and sensing problems inside
If the vent is clear and dry times are still doubled, the machine gets a real look. Weak heat from a failing element or a burner that lights inconsistently will drag a cycle out. So will a thermostat that cycles the heat off too early. On the sensing side, moisture bars inside the drum get coated with softener film and read clothes as wet forever, so the timer keeps running. On gas units, ignition and gas components are technician territory. Do not open panels, do not touch gas connections, and leave anything with stored electrical charge alone. Unplug and call.

We measure instead of guess. Static pressure in the duct tells us how restricted the run really is, even when the outside flap looks fine. We check amp draw on the heat circuit and actual air temperature at the outlet, then compare that to what the model should produce. We snake the full vent run, including the sections inside walls and attics you cannot see. We test the moisture sensor with a wet cloth and watch what the control board does. Can I just run two cycles and live with it?
We would not. A blocked vent traps heat and lint in the cabinet, which is a fire risk, and it runs up your power bill. It also cooks the belt, bearings, and heating parts faster than normal use.
How often should the vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most homes. Go more often if you have a long duct run, do laundry daily, or dry pet bedding. If dry times creep up before a year is out, clean it sooner.
Would a new dryer fix this?
Usually not. A brand new dryer hooked to a clogged vent dries just as poorly. Clear the vent first, then decide. Plenty of dryers we see are mechanically fine and simply cannot breathe.
