Do these things first, in this order
1. Unplug the appliance that was running when the breaker went. If it's hardwired, leave the breaker off instead. 2. Reset the breaker once. Push it fully off, then firmly on. 3. Watch what happens with the appliance still unplugged. If the breaker holds, the appliance is your problem. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the circuit or the breaker is. 4. Check what else shares that circuit. A space heater and a microwave on one kitchen line will trip a breaker all day long. 5. Sniff around the outlet and the cord. Burnt plastic smell changes everything, so stop there and call us.
What not to do, even once
Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips right back. That breaker is doing its job, and repeated resets heat the wiring behind your wall. Never tape, wedge, or hold a breaker in the on position. Skip the swap to a bigger breaker too. The wire in the wall was sized for the old one, and a larger breaker just lets that wire cook. Don't pull the panel cover off to look inside. Live parts stay live with the main off. Leave the appliance's back panel closed as well. Motors and boards hold charge after you unplug them, and there's nothing back there a homeowner can safely check.
When to stop and get out
Leave the house and call 911 if you see smoke, sparks that keep coming, or flame at an outlet or appliance. Same goes if a wall or outlet cover feels hot to the touch. If you can safely reach the main breaker on your way out, shut it off. If you can't, go anyway. With a gas dryer or range, a gas smell plus electrical trouble means everybody outside first, then call the gas company from down the street. Don't flip switches. Don't hunt for the leak, and don't use the phone inside. Buzzing from the panel itself is another one to walk away from.
