Do These Things Right Now, In Order
1. Stop and sniff. If the smell is strong, skip ahead to leaving the house. 2. Check every burner knob and the oven dial and make sure all of them are fully off. A knob bumped to a half-turn puts out gas without lighting. 3. Open windows and an exterior door so air moves through. 4. If a pot boiled over and drowned a burner, that smell may clear in a few minutes once air is moving. 5. If the smell stays, or you can't find a cause, get everyone outside and call your gas utility from the yard. Text us after that.
What Not to Do
Don't flip light switches. Don't unplug the range or push on the wall outlet, and don't hit the garage door button, since any of those can spark. Don't light a match or a lighter to "test" where it's coming from. Don't run a fan or turn on the range hood. Skip candles entirely. Leave your cell phone alone until you're outside and away from the house. Don't pull the range out from the wall to look behind it, and don't put a wrench on the flex line or the shutoff. Moving that connection can turn a small leak into a big one. And don't wait it out overnight hoping it fades.
When to Leave the House
Leave now if the smell is strong, if you hear a hiss near the range, if anybody feels dizzy or nauseous or has a headache, or if you smell it in more than one room. Take the kids and pets. Walk out the front door and don't stop to gather things. Go across the street or down the block, then call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. They come out at any hour and they don't charge to check a leak report. Don't go back inside to open windows or shut off gas. Let the utility clear the house first. That's their job, not yours.
Cutting Gas or Power, Only If It's Safe
If the smell is faint and you're calm, the range usually has a shutoff valve on the gas line behind it or beside it. If you can reach the handle without moving the appliance, and you know which way to turn it, a quarter turn stops the flow. If you'd have to drag the range out, or you're guessing, don't. Same goes for the main valve at the meter. Some homes need a wrench and some meters are locked, so leave that to the utility. Electric power isn't the issue here, and reaching for a breaker panel in a gassy room adds risk for nothing.

Can I keep using the oven until a tech comes out?
No. Stop using the range and oven entirely. Use a microwave or eat out. Running an appliance that smells like gas risks a flash, or a slow buildup you won't notice.
