Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across Texas
One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop
A single cold burner usually comes down to the element, its socket, or the switch that feeds it, and we repair all three across Lubbock and the rest of Texas. You turn the knob and wait, and the pan never warms. Sometimes the element glows for a second and quits. Dinner sits there while you figure it out. The cheap parts are the ones that fail most often, which is good news for you.

What a cold element is actually telling you
Electric cooktops are simple. Power runs through a switch or control board to the heating element, and heat comes back out. When one burner is dead and the others cook fine, the trouble is in that burner's own circuit, not the whole range. When every burner is dead but the clock and oven light still work, that points at one leg of the incoming power. That difference matters a lot. It tells us whether we're chasing a single part or looking at the breaker panel and the feed to the appliance. Write down which burners work and which don't before you call anybody.
Cause family one: the element or its plug-in socket
On coil-top ranges the element unplugs from a receptacle under the cooktop, and that receptacle fails often. Years of grease, spills, and heat cycling burn the contacts. You get arcing, then an open connection. The element itself can also go bad inside, sometimes with a blister or break you can spot by eye. Look the coil over for a swollen area, a crack, or black burning near the terminals. On glass smooth-tops the element lives under the glass and can't be inspected without pulling the top, so leave that one to us.
Cause family two: switches and controls
An infinite switch controls burner heat by cycling power on and off. It carries real current, and it wears out. You might get a burner stuck on high, a burner that never heats at all, or one that only works at certain knob positions. Touch-control smooth-tops use a relay board for the same job. Once the relay contacts pit, the burner quits responding even though the display still lights up. Bad wiring connections behind the element belong in this family too. Heat loosens terminals over the years, and West Texas summers plus a hot kitchen do not help.
Safe checks you can do right now
Start at the breaker. Electric ranges use a double breaker, and one half can trip while the other half stays on. Flip it all the way off, then back on. If you have a coil element that unplugs, wait until the cooktop is completely cool, pull it, and check the two prongs for burn marks. Then swap that element with a same-size working one from another burner. If the cold spot follows the element, you need an element. If the burner stays cold with a known-good element, the fault is deeper. Stop right there. Don't remove the cooktop, unscrew panels, or start testing wires. Call us.
What we do that you can't from the kitchen
We kill the power, open the cooktop, and meter each part in order. Continuity across the element, then voltage at the receptacle, then switch contacts under load instead of cold. That last check is the one that catches problems, because a switch can read fine at rest and fail the moment current flows. On smooth-tops we compare element resistance to spec and look for cracked glass or moisture under the surface. We also try to find out why the part died in the first place, like a loose terminal that cooked itself, so the new one lasts. We're an independent shop and work on all major brands, in Lubbock and the rest of Texas.
One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop — common questions
Can I keep using the other burners while one is dead?
Usually yes, as long as the breaker holds and there's no scorching, smoke, or burning smell. If a burner arced or sparked, shut the breaker off and quit using the cooktop until somebody checks the wiring.
Why does my burner glow, then shut off?
Often that's an infinite switch cycling wrong on its way out, or a thermal limiter on a smooth-top reacting to heat. A weak connection heating up and opening does the same thing. Metering is the only way to sort it out.
Is a smooth-top element harder to replace than a coil?
It's more work. The glass top has to come off carefully before you can reach the element and its wiring. Coil elements just unplug. Both jobs get done, but the smooth-top needs the glass handled right.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. A noise, a leak, an error code, a burning odor. Give us the brand and rough age if you know them.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician shows up with common parts on the truck. We test the machine instead of guessing. Then we explain what failed in plain words, and what the repair takes, before anything gets opened up.
- Step 3
You decide, we repair
Nothing gets replaced without your go-ahead. Most repairs finish the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you straight and set a return time that works for your day.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water is our specialtyWest Texas scale wrecks dishwashers, ice makers, and water valves, and we see it daily. Spray arms clog. Heating elements crust over and inlet screens choke up white. We clean and replace the parts scale eats first.
- Built for Texas summersHeat pushes refrigerators and freezers hard. Condenser coils pack with dust, compressors run nonstop, and garage freezers quit in triple digits. We check cooling systems for heat load, not just for the obvious broken part.
- Plain talk, no runaroundWe tell you what died and why. If a machine is not worth fixing, we say so. You get the reasoning instead of a sales pitch, and you make the call yourself.
- Most brands, most machinesWashers, dryers, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, fridges, freezers. We work as an independent shop on all major brands, top load and front load, gas and electric. One call covers the laundry room and the kitchen.
- All major brands, gas & electricEvery major appliance brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent shop.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
